What made you choose GP over the plethora of specialties in medicine?

Did you know GP was something you were always interested in Med School? How is the work life balance working as a GP? How do you handle sad scenarios at the GP such as death?

Wow, few questions! ok

I went into medical school wanting to become a Paediatrician. I worked towards that throughout med school, my research, audits as well as my elective in Toronto being in a children's hospital.

It was during my year out after foundation training that I changed my mind. I worked in Paediatrics and loved it but did not enjoy the poor work-life balance. At the same time, I knew my interests are varied including women's health, palliative care and global health. I wanted to maintain a good work-life balance and that was important to me. Working in GP allowed me to marry up all my interests and the flexibility allowed me to pursue other interests such as my work in the community, etc. GP allows you to choose the extent of your working week, hours worked, days etc.

You become accustomed to death and certifying dead bodies as part of your medical job. Dont worry about that. It was daunting for me too initially but you learn to get used to tbh.
