How much freedom do you have to write about topics that interest you as a journalist?

I’ve been trying to figure this one out lately too! I think it all depends on the type of journalist you want to be. For me, I’ve always known that I didn’t want to specialise in one specific type of journalism (e.g sports journalist/ fashion writing etc) but I also know that just because you are working on a specific desk that it does not mean you can't cover other topics outside of that area that interests you.

From what I’ve gathered, it depends on what publication you are writing for, how much freedom you have to write outside the specific editorial needs of that desk. In general, I’d say you do have the freedom to write about what interests you, but not every article you write will be a passion project/ article.
